Reworking Projects Helps You See Your Growth

    May 11, 2020 /

I rarely rework projects. I revisit stories I wrote and enjoyed in my youth and write about them again, but that’s more out of a desire to go into those worlds than to see how much I’ve improved.  Many creative types make Then/Now posts, but I was neglecting to do the same. I was doing myself a disservice. I was feeling…

Originally published on my website on February 27th, 2019. You can find the original version here. I happened to read over it and realized I could do better; my writing has improved enough that I feel this deserved another go. I also felt the original was very defensive, and off-putting as a result. One of the most enduring testaments…

Happy Friday, everyone! Since being in quarantine, the days definitely feel a bit different, don’t they? I know for me and a lot of people, they just kind of blend together. While I am lucky enough to be employed at this present time, I still have the desire to seek creative outlets more fervently. You might have noticed the…

    A Hole in the Ice

    April 30, 2020 /

And when I leave you,  It won’t be the gradual chill of winter mornings  Found in the beginning of the season, When berries hang fat and red on their stems And birds puff up their feathers,  Like old men hunched down in woolen scarves and mittens Lovingly made by old women. It will be a plunge into icy water, …

I was speaking to a friend and fellow writer, and they were confiding in me their frustration. An acquaintance of theirs had had their website featured on a large Facebook page, and as a result, the popularity of their website was booming. “I love writing and do it nearly every day. This person made their site on a whim…

“She read books as one would breathe air, to fill up and live.” -Anne Dillard I could begin this post by telling you how my mom read to me as a child, or my favorite books that I remember best from the early-dawn years of my life. Instead, I will tell you that there’s no one certain date I can…

I could circle you, ravenous, and take you as my prey, But I would rather roll onto my back gentle as clouds and let you have me under that watching blue sky. Control is an illusion but I keep reaching for it, Perhaps I’ve been waiting for the caress of words; the intoxicating loss of control. The muse imprisoned,…

I hadn’t been able to write lately. I hadn’t been sleeping well, I wasn’t able to concentrate. I felt like I was trying to get to the surface, but it was dark and mud coated my mouth. I didn’t know how to say what’s been going on in my head. I don’t know how to write about things like…

    February Reading Wrap-Up

    February 29, 2020 /

Hello, everyone! I have been busy this month in terms of reading, so I’m excited to share my wrap-up for the month of February. Side rant: I do not like the system of 1-5 stars. I feel it’s just not enough of a scale to accurately rate books, especially with how subjective reading is. I feel it’s more helpful to find…

It struck fast, when it did. I went to bed after what I assumed was a coughing fit brought on by the temperature changes (it happens sometimes; my asthmatic lungs are fickle) and woke up with chills and body aches. It’s been a rough few weeks around here. We have all been hit hard with the flu. And, in…

I know not everyone uses wall #calendars anymore, I know not everyone uses wall #calendars anymore, but I LOVE THEM. I love having pretty things to look at, whether it’s pinups, fantasy art, cute food illustrations (for the kitchen, of course), or in this case, photos of places I would rather be.

I am a fan of all the classic Christmas movies——both Home Alones, The Grinch, White Christmas, A Muppet Christmas Carol.....but Krampus has become a yearly tradition, too. It’s so much fun, yet has eerie moments (the snowmen....yikes). Somehow, even though the mail is seriously delayed right now, I was able to get a replacement copy in the mail within a week.

Because posting selfies is A Thing We Do Here, and Because posting selfies is A Thing We Do Here, and because I was tagged for a #gettoknowme, here are some random facts. (I feel weird doing these. I never know what to put.)
1. I majored in English/Lit but wish I had studied to become a librarian or museum curator.
2. I’m 5ft 9inches tall, or 175.26cm, and a lefty. Okay, that’s two things under one number. 😂
3. The first “adult” horror book I read was a collection of Poe stories.
4. I love spiders, bugs in general, and reptiles. (But all animals are pretty cool in my book.) I don’t like it when people kill animals simply for existing. Most animals we think of as “scary” go out of their way to avoid humans.
5. I’m not fond of my voice, so I prefer to listen, instead of talk.

Of course, I would never just shove a vintage paperback in there, but isn’t Ramsey Campbell’s Dark Companions perfect with the fabric pattern and red lining? 😍 Incidentally, this book MADE ME EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE.
I’ve read so much horror that it’s rare for me to be truly creeped out; I was so happy that Dark Companions delivered. Thanks to @lanecrioteca for selling it!

What’s the last book you’ve read that’s truly unnerved you?
