Gentle

When you tell me that there are aspects of my personality

You find really unattractive

I want you to know

Every single flaw you perceive in me

I have seen and examined in myself

A thousand times more closely

A thousand times more harshly

And found terrible a thousand times greater

Than you ever could.

I have spent years disliking

Or hating what I saw in the mirror

I still have far to travel as I heal

So I would gently request

You not remind me how ugly I’ve been

I am painfully aware

That’s the part about being in touch with one’s feelings that no one wants to talk about. You can’t have empathy without first practicing introspection. Being open means being exposed. Keep being your best self until your critics start asking you how you do it.
